The Akai MPC is a series of music workstations produced by Akai from 1988 onwards. The Ren is basically the X in controller mode. If you compare the Ren to the X, it's a no Brainer to get the X for all of the modern features. The fun comes when you power up the MPC in standalone mode in a bedroom, living room, or outside, when you are free to be inspired and creative, without the conundrums of software bugs, installation, and the internet (which can be a HUGE distraction from beatmaking). I have Ableton, Logic, and ProTools, so there's no software limitations for me.
